Using Context Clues ; Definition, Example, Cause and Effect.
1.       



Definition.
A common type of context clue actually defines a word that may be unfamiliar. A definition clue is similar to a restatement clue. Definition clue may be signaled by commas or dashes and words or phrases such or, that,is,and other words. In the following sentence, the comma and the word or signal the definition of props.
Many time a writer defines a word, directly or indirectly, immediately following its use. The writer may define a word direcly by giving a brief definition or providing a synonym ( a word that has the same meaning). Such words and phrases as means, is, refers to, and can be defined as are often used.

Definition clues in action
In each sentence below, look for clues that define the word printed in italic, for each item, underline the word or phara that is a definition clue. Words signaling definition or restatement include or, which is, that is, in other words, also known as, also called, etc.
Ø  Examples: a. language is vested in culture and the origin of spoken language is
                         as old as humanity it self.
     b. the best team usually prevails is the winner.
     c. during their mountain hike, Amy and Rodo came across a beautiful
         cascade, that is a waterfall.
    d. ‘’put away your books and get ready for a short Quiz. Yes, that
         means a test’’.

2.      Example.
To helping reader to explained unknow words or words signaling examples include like, for instance, this, including, such as, other, these include, for example, these, especially, consist of.
Ø  Examples : a. when going to an office party you should show your best decorum, for example, the best dress, drink and eat moderately, and be sure to thank the best before you leave.
    b. the builder decided that the school could be build on a number of
         sites, for example a long a wooded path, near the ocean, or a top a
         mountain.

3.      Cause and effect.
The cause of an action may be started using unfamiliar word. However, if the effect is started in familiar words, the reader can infer its meaning.
Cause and effect clues are signals : because, so, as a result, some reasons, etc.
They help the readers to figure out the meaning of a difficult word. One part of the sentence is a cause and another part is an effect of the cause.
Ø  Examples : a. Dodo did not attend the lecture this morning because He went to
The Zoo with his friends.
b. Mary had been sick for three weeks, so she went to the drugstore for her Medicine.
c. Shemi was a hard working man for several jobs to earn money, as a result he had a very Lux car.
In this kind of Paragraph, you learn either why something happened or what happened as a result of something. The writer may explain conditions or events that cause a certain situation or may discuss conditions or events that result from a situation. The following selection tells about a common effect in humans, and then it explains the causes that scientists have found.
Cause and effect are important in much of the scientific and technical material you will read in college. As those of you who study science already know, many scientific discoveries were made because a scientist studied cause and effect in natural events. In the passage you just read, you saw how behavioral psychologists studied an effect, aggression, to see if they could discover some possible cause for it. The pain-attack mechanism provides an explanation for an important cause-and-effect relationship.
v  If the write tells why something happened, what happened because of something, or what might happen because of something, you can expect reasons to explain causes or effects.
v  Look for word clues: because, since, as a result, therefore, consequently, so.
v  Remember that many causes can contribute to a single situation and that many effects can grow from a single cause.

In our everyday life we frequently consider causes. For instance, we avoid eating food that smells bad or touching something that is glowing hot, because we know what effect tainted food or red-hot objects will have on us. So also, when we read a passage, we can look for reasons ( causes) behind events described (effects).

Definition                         : refer to can be defined as, is or are, means, can be called, belong to, be relevant to, etc.
Example                             : to explain or to clarify certain or unfamiliar words, examples are signals : Like, such as, for example, for instance, to illustrate, including, especially, etc.
Cause and effect          : relationship between previous clause or sentence and after. The 
                                        signals words are because, cause, because of, due to, that for,
                                                  therefore, etc.
