Understanding Sentence Patterns
( Reading Sentence That Combine Ideas, Reading Sentence That Relate Ideas )

A.    Reading sentence that combine Ideas.
Many sentences express more than one key idea. Often a writer will combine two or more closely related ideas into one sentence. This is done for one of three reasons: (1) to clarify the key ideas, (2) to emphasize their connection, or (3) to show that they are of equal importance.
Two complete ideas can be combined by:
1.     Using a semicolon
Example : some students hate sains science, others enjoy it.

2.     Using a comma followed by a conjunction (for, and, nor, but,or,yet, so)
Example : English education department is my major, so I have to take English courses.

B.    Reading sentence that relate ideas
Often the writer expands a sentence by adding a related but less important idea. This related idea has its own noun and verb, but it express an incomplete thought and cannot stand by it self.
The idea of lesser importance usually performs one or more of the following functions:
§  Expresses time relationships
Example       : while I was washing my clothes, my phone rang.
§  Describes conditions or circumstances
Example       : if I pass in faculty of education and teacher training, I
                          Will be a teacher.
§  States purpose or reason
Example       : George was hungry so he could not concentrate .
§  Expresses cause
Example       : because I was tired, I need take a rest.
§  Describes
Example       :  my son, who is ten years old, the winner in festival.
